Navigating the sea of business advice available on LinkedIn and other social media platforms can be a daunting task for any startup founder. The sheer volume of information, combined with often conflicting opinions from self-proclaimed experts, billionaires and other successful founders makes it essential to develop a strategic approach to discern which guidance truly merits attention. How do you parse through the noise?
Assess Credibility
Not all advice is created equal. Sorry, but not all billionaires give sage advice. Past success is a good indicator of future success however, one success, even if massive, does not make that individual the expert about your business. Evaluate the credibility of the source by considering their experience, record, and expertise in the area they are discussing. Look for contributors who have demonstrable success and a history of providing actionable insights, rather than those who merely boast or repeat popular buzzwords.
Consider Context
Business advice is not one-size-fits-all. What works for one company may not work for another. Consider the context for the advice and whether it applies to the specific circumstances of your startup. Factors such as industry, stage of development, and market conditions should play a role in how, or if, you apply the information. Look for patterns with advice which reflect collective wisdom rather than isolated opinions. Read and learn and do not take the loudest voice or most active content producer at face value.
Like all advice and guidance, use in small doses. Implement on a small scale and test. Iterate and repeat, as necessary. Ask questions and try not to go ‘all in’ before doing the work to validate the merits of the advice.
The business landscape for startups is constantly evolving. Stay updated and informed and surround yourself with a diverse network of advisors and peers.
Have a successful week!
